The Haim sisters performing together
The Sister Trio: "Playing music together is where our passion will forever be found."

"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The sender also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. A host of high-profile fans have publicly coveted the role.

It's clear something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos repeatedly feature them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that fans told us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage people to form a group."

"Therefore everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth part of the family."

The band's live shows have propelled them ascend to headliner status of major events throughout Europe.

Historic Milestone

The band are connecting from a break, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," says Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The lyrics detail endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

The band claimed victory in a major breakthrough list in 2013, and have subsequently achieved four top 10 albums.

Refinement of Style

That recent resilience required a new sound – more organic and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's openness shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

A former partner left Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

The group recently wrapped up a major tour, but mention they aim to perform live in the future.

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an international following.

However the sister act will consistently be their number one priority.

"We have been playing music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
