Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
