Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms result in an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
